For more information see the FAQ. Use the setup program to perform a fresh install or to update an existing installation. Keep in mind that individual packages in the distribution are updated separately from the DLL so the Cygwin DLL version is not useful as a general Cygwin distribution release number.
For all Cygwin-related questions and observations, please check the resources available at this site, such as the FAQ , the User's Guide and the mailing list archives. If you've exhausted these resources then please send email to an appropriate mailing list. This includes observations about web pages, setup questions, questions about where to find things, questions about why things are done a certain way, questions about the color preferences of Cygwin developers, questions about the meaning of the number 42, etc.
Please send notification of technical problems bad html, broken links concerning these web pages to the Cygwin mailing list. Please do not send personal email with "quick questions" to individual Cygwin contributors.
Note that the setup program runs all the post-install scripts after all desired packages have been installed, that is, it does not run each package's post-install script immediately after installing that package. Post-install scripts are run in dependency order. If dependency loops exist, the order in which those package's scripts are run is undefined. Note that the setup program runs all the pre-remove scripts before any packages have been uninstalled.
Note that when upgrading a package, the pre-remove script for the currently installed version will be run before it is removed, then the post-install script for the upgraded version will be run after it is installed.
In addition to the ordinary "run-once" post-install scripts described above, the setup program supports "perpetual" post-install scripts. These are run on every invocation of setup, as long as the package is still installed. For those package maintainers wanting to employ perpetual scripts, the first thing to keep in mind is to only use this feature for things that really can't be done with run-once scripting.
Any perpetual script should minimize the resources used use dash instead of bash for instance and exit at the earliest possible moment if no action is required. See this mailing list post for more discussion and current limitations.
